What is the difference between jail and prison?
Jails are smaller, shorter term facilities that typically hold people awaiting trial, transfer, or serving time for a misdemeanor with a maximum of one year. Meanwhile prisons are typically larger facilities where felons will be housed for more than a year.
How do you find out what prison someone is in?
To find out what prison someone is in you need to know whether they are in a federal or state prison.
Federal Prisons: Use the Federal Bureau of Prisons (BOP) Inmate Locator to search by name, age, race, and sex.
State Prisons: Search “(State) Inmate Locator.” Find the website. Then search by name and other known information.
In some scenarios, an inmate may be transferred out of state, which may complicate the search. Then you’ll have to search multiple sites the same way.
Do prisons allow conjugal visits when you aren’t married?
No. Most prison systems do not allow conjugal visits at all. The BOP does not allow conjugal visits and only California, Connecticut, New York, and Washington specifically allow them for married couples. There’s always an exception to the rule and you can marry prisoners, but I strongly discourage it.
