Over 700,000 people commit suicide each year. Sometimes they take their lives quietly, but sometimes a suicide is louder and begs to be discussed. On February 21, 2025 a Pumpdotfun crypto user played Russian roulette and kid himself where everyone could watch.
It's sad when this kind of thing happens, but the crypto space can be trying on your mental, physical, and emotional health. We're going to discuss some of the reasons crypto suicides happen, what you can do to prevent the and how the crypto community deals with mental health.
Impact of Cryptocurrency on Mental Health
The cryptocurrency markets are a fast pace, exciting environment, but NFTs and cryptocurrencies can go up and down in value extremely fast. That encourages small investors to stay awake longer and deprive themselves of sleep while chasing dopamine hits.
They may also may have substance abuse issues, mental health issues, or be desperate for a big win.
Many expect to make life changing money and bet their life savings on a meme coin that ends up rug pulling, or they buy at the peak of a market and watch cryptocurrencies drop by 90%.
There are things you can do to reduce this risk.
Never Invest More Than You Can Afford To Lose
Crypto is degenerate gambling. There's insider trading, pyramid schemes, and rug pulls all over the place. When you invest in crypto, you should treat it like going to a casino, the house always wins.
Realistically, if you are not an accredited investor, don't put more than $1,000 into any cryptocurrency project especially when you're new to the market.
Diversify
Most investors don't put all their money into one investment. You shouldn't either. As a general rule, never have more than 10% of money you are willing to lose in a single investment. This will prevent you from taking huge losses.
Take Gains
When you invest in a project, have an entry and exit point. I personally like to sell 50% at 3-5x my investment and let the rest ride. When combined with the previous suggestions, you'll likely never make a killing, but you won't lose that much much either.
Crypto And Mental Health
Many crypto and NFT creators are passionate about giving back to support causes close to their hearts. For instance, my other project Bawls Onu donates a portion of proceeds to the Testicular Cancer Awareness Foundation and my buddies at Mobilizing Good.
The Giving Block helps nonprofits discover new fundraising streams in Crypto Philanthropy. The American Foundation for Suicide Prevention (AFSP) and the Texas Suicide Prevention Collaborative both accept support through crypto donations.

Closing

Crypto related suicides are a devastating part of the community we are a part of. Crypto deaths are unnecessary and a tragic loss. When a guy commits suicide, people shouldn't be laughing about it, watching it, and making memecoins about it.
We should be coming together and spreading a message of responsibility around the world and sending more cryptocurrency donations to communities that support suicide prevention services.
Answer the call and go donate to suicide prevention.
